Factors Influencing Successful Coping among Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Personnel: Recruiting for Resilience – A Mixed Methods Study

Abstract Successful coping is important for staff well-being, retention and reducing absenteeism, especially those employed in high emotional labour jobs such as crime scene investigation (CSI). Antecedents of successful can include self-efficacy, locus control, optimism, resilience, self-esteem. However, a dearth literature exists attaining to the importance emotion-regulation mindfulness these roles, despite evidence revealing that both are conducive better well-being. Additionally, few studies with CSI personnel have mixed methods approach, which enables exploration lived experiences addition survey analysis. Here, we recruited 84 employees 88 students undertaking degree enabling employment within CSI, comprehensively explore factors predicting coping. 75 took part quantitative aspect, where questionnaire data pertaining above well-being factors, well depression, anxiety stress, were collected. In concurrent qualitative aspect project, nine officers roles recruited. Semi-structured interviews more deeply explored resilience coping, including how managed their occupation. Quantitative analyses revealed that, personnel, greatest predictors regulation. Compared students, further reported greater self-esteem, resilience; fewer difficulties emotion regulation, stress. Inductive also regulation be key factors; but additionally, finding meaning work/collegiate support enabled Potential implications findings discussed pre-employment screening inclusion training/CPD curricula.
